[01] Latest resolution will give impetus to Cyprus settlement talks

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that the latest UN Security Council resolution extending the UN Peace Keeping Force's mandate in Cyprus will give a fresh impetus to the Cyprus settlement talks.

In a statement issued on 15 December, the Ministry said that Russia would continue to contribute constructively to the international efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem within the framework of the UN resolutions.

[02] Government makes large contribution to agricultural sector

The Minister of Agriculture Natural Resources and the Environment Mr Costas Themistocleous said at a press conference yesterday, that between the years 1993 and 2000, the Government has spent 430 million Cyprus pounds in support of the broad agricultural sector.

Mr Themistocleous said that in the last few years, in an attempt to face the problems created by bad weather conditions and the drought, the government has given financial assistance of 72 million pounds to farmers. Moreover, the government contributed more than 20 million pounds to the Agricultural Insurance Organisation. A further amount of 25 million pounds was allocated to the agricultural sector for development programmes of the Departments of Agriculture and Land Consolidation.

The Government follows a policy, which aims at assisting farmers in every possible way, he said. Developing the broad agricultural sector by restructuring and upgrading it and meeting the challenges created by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) are among the Government's priorities.
