[01] China can play an important role in the search for a Cyprus settlementThe Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Peoples' Republic of China Mr Ji Peiding arrived in Cyprus yesterday for a two-day official visit, during which he will have meetings with government officials.Yesterday morning the Chinese Deputy Minister had a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Spyros Kyprianou. Mr Peiding said that relations between China and Cyprus are friendly and are constantly improving. He underlined that his country supports a just solution of the Cyprus problem and is working towards this direction. "The independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and non alignment of the Republic Cyprus must be respected", he said, adding that China supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General and the implementation of the United Nations resolutions. Concluding, Mr Peiding said that his country, as a permanent member of the Security Council, would play an important role in the search of a solution of the Cyprus problem and stressed that the solution should be based on the United Nations resolutions. On his part, Mr Kyprianou thanked Mr Peiding for China's support for a just solution of the Cyprus problem. Cyprus values greatly the role China plays as a permanent member of the Security Council, he said. Referring to the Cyprus problem, Mr Kyprianou said that the people of Cyprus are living under conditions of occupation and ethnic cleansing. The Turkish invasion was based on a plan of expulsion, of uprooting of the population and of altering the demographic character of the island, he said. "Turkey did not invade Cyprus to protect the Turkish Cypriots but to apply its expansionist plans", he said, noting that many Turkish Cypriots have emigrated and have asked for political asylum abroad.
