[01] UN Secretary General's Special Advisor arrives in Cyprus for talks

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides had a working breakfast yesterday with the UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on Cyprus Mr Alvaro de Soto, who arrived on the island for talks.

In a statement to the press after the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou said that during the meeting President Clerides and Mr de Soto reviewed the present situation of the Cyprus problem, in view of the fifth round of proximity talks, to be held in Geneva from 1-10 November 2000.

Later in the day, President Clerides presided over a meeting of the National Council, which comprises party leaders and representatives and is the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus question.

"The National Council studied the latest developments and discussed concerns in view of the preparations for the next round of talks in Geneva", Mr Papapetrou stated after the meeting.

The Government Spokesman also said that the political party leaders would be present in Geneva when the talks resume.
