[01] New York City Council condemns Turkish invasion and occupation

The Speaker of the Council of the City of New York Mr. Peter Vallone organized an event yesterday, condemning the Turkish invasion and occupation.

In a proclamation handed to the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Mr. Sotos Zackheos, who was present, the Council strongly condemns the Turkish invasion of July 20, 1974 and notes that over $200 million worth of American military equipment is deployed by the Turkish government in its illegal occupation of Cyprus.

"The expenses of maintaining Turkish troops in Cyprus equals half of America 's more than $500 million of annual foreign aid to Turkey," it adds.

The Turkish Cypriot leadership, with the encouragemnt and backing of the government of Turkey, has refused to respond in a positive manner to the United Nations Secretary General, frustrating all efforts for a negotiated solution, the proclamation says, adding that "the United States has strongly opposed Turkey's continuing occupation of Cyprus which is in contravention of numerous United Nations resolutions."

"Now, therefore be it known: that the Council of the City of New York condemns the Turkish invasion and occupation of part of Cyprus twenty-six years ago," it concludes.
