The minister stressed the importance of tourism to the island's economy and warned that «tourism's very good course should not be taken for granted», given the serious challenges it has to deal with. «Harmonisation with the acquis communautaire in the tourism sector has reached an advanced stage,» he pointed out, adding that the course of Cyprus accession negotiations with the European Union shows that the Republic «will face no problems regarding its harmonisation with the acquis in the tourism sector». Revenues from tourism in recent years constitute around one fifth of Cyprus/GDP. [02] There is no sign of substantive change in the Turkish stance over Cyprus, says KyprianouThe President of the House of Representatives Mr. Spyros Kyprianou said yesterday that if no progress is made during the third round of proximity talks, there is no commitment on our side that we will proceed to a fourth or a fifth round of talks.Speaking after a meeting with the President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides, Mr. Kyprianou noted that so far there is no sign of a substantive change in the Turkish stance over Cyprus.
