[01] The US works to bring about a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus
US Secretary of State Ms Madeleine Albright stressed recently the need for
a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.
Speaking at a dinner in honour of Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios, held
on 12 May in Washington Ms Albright said : "Cyprus has been divided far too
long. The status quo is unacceptable. That is why the President and I are
working to bring about a comprehensive settlement."
Moreover she noted that President Clinton has appointed a Special
Presidential Emissary for Cyprus and that "we have a full time Cyprus
Coordinator at the State Department Mr. Thomas Weston.
And it is why we have strongly supported the EU/s decision to start
accession talks with Cyprus.
I know that all of you share my prayers for President Clerides/ speedy
recovery. And we look forward to the re-commencement of the talks soon.",
she added.
