[01] Foreign Minister holds contacts in Italy
Cyprus Foreign Minister Mr. Ioannis Kassoulides met yesterday in Rome with
the President of the Italian Parliament Mr. Luciano Violante.
Mr. Kassoulides thanked Mr. Violante for the resolution adopted last
October by the Italian Parliament, which urged the government to support
Cyprus/ accession to the EU irrespective of a political settlement of the
Cyprus problem.
Moreover Mr. Kassoulides stressed that the positive climate created by the
Helsinki decision must have a positive influence on efforts to reach a
political settlement.
In a dinner hosted by Cyprus/ Ambassador to Italy Ms Myrna Cleopa,given in
Mr. Kassoulides honour, Italian Deputy Foreign Minister on European affairs
Mr. Umberto Ranieri reaffirmed his country/s commitment to the conditions
that will lead to the reunification of the island.
Mr. Ranieri also praised the Cyprus government for its efforts to become an
EU member.
[02] Cyprus EU Chief Negotiator successfully operated in London
Former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Head of the Negotiating Team
for Cyprus accession to the EU and President of the United Democrats Mr.
George Vassiliou has been operated last night in London to remove a benign
brain tumour.
According to a statement by Professor Alan Crockard who conducted the
operation, "Mr. George Vassiliou had an operation today (10.5.2000) at the
National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London to remove a
large, deeply seated, benign brain tumour. The surgery, which lasted 4,5
hours, was successful and he was transferred to the intensive care unit for
the next 36 hours. His condition is entirely satisfactory but he will be
most carefully monitored during the next few days."
