[01] Cyprus government awaits Turkey's compliance with European Court's decision on Loizidou

A number of Cypriot individuals have made a legal recourse to the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey, following a precedent set by Ms Titina Loizidou, Government Spokesman Costas Serezis said yesterday.

As Mr. Serezis pointed out the recourses (about 30) have been admissible by the European Court.

A recent decision by the European Court (July 1998) held Turkey responsible for depriving Ms Loizidou of her legal right to "accede to and peacefully enjoy her property" in the occupied Kyrenia .

Moreover it obliged Turkey to pay an important compensation (of several hundreds of thousands of US $) to Ms Loizidou for violation of her property rights.

The government of Cyprus, Mr. Serezis added, awaits Turkey's full compliance with the European Court's decision.

[02] Cyprus hosts Regional FAO Meeting

Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment , Mr Costas Themistocleous opened yesterday in Larnaca a FAO Regional Meeting on Seed Policy and Programmes in the Near East and North Africa.

In his opening address, Mr Themistocleous stressed the importance of the use of high quality seed in upgrading agricultural productivity and in improving farm income.

He added that today the Seed Production Centre of the Department of Agriculture covers to a great extent a large part of the local demand for seeds.

Moreover Mr Themistocleous expressed his conviction that the "deliberations of the Regional Meeting will identify existing problems and will formulate recommendations to overcome them"
