[02] Cyprus and China will promote financial co-operation

The Finance Ministers of Cyprus and China discussed yesterday ways to put into effect various existing agreements in a bid to promote financial co- operation.

Cyprus Finance Minister Mr. Takis Clerides said the meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xian Huai Cheng gave him the opportunity to exchange views «on the establishment of joint ventures in the field of technology, which China possesses and how these joint ventures can find their way to the EU». He added that China would like to use Cyprus as a bridge to Europe.

Mr Clerides also said that the two ministries have undertaken to examine ways to better implement an existing agreement on the avoidance of double taxation.

[03] Cyprus to host 3rd EuroMediterranean Conference for Ministers of Industry

Cyprus will host the 3rd EuroMediterranean Mediterranean Conference for Ministers of Industry of the 27 EuroMediterranean partners, scheduled to take place in June 2000.

The decision was taken during the works of the EU Committee for EuroMediterranean Affairs held last Tuesday in Brussels after a proposal submitted by the Government of Cyprus.

The 3rd EuroMediterranean Conference for Ministers of Industry will deal with issues relating to financial co-operation between the 27 EuroMediterranean partners (15 EU countries + 12 Mediterranean countries) as well as the internal market and the progress achieved so far in those fields. Moreover it will examine ways to further promote investment activities in the Mediterranean Basin, the industrial structure of small and medium size enterprises as well as the implications of the internal market on the Mediterranean countries.
