[01] Cyprus, an ideal business centre for Chinese companies, says Clerides

"Cyprus, despite its small size has all the prerequisites to attract Chinese businessmen to increase their activities in the markets of the area. The favourable economic environment coupled with the business contacts and experience of Cypriot entrepreneurs make Cyprus an ideal centre for business activities for Chinese companies", stressed yesterday President Clerides.

Addressing the China - Cyprus Economic and Trade Seminar in Bejing, President Clerides outlined the advantages Cyprus has to offer to Chinese businessmen, such as its geographical location and its relations with the EU as well as the island's tax and other incentives companies can benefit from. "The companies that use Cyprus for their activities can further benefit from the Customs Union Agreement between Cyprus and the EU which provides for the abolition of all barriers to trade", he said .

He added that Chinese companies "can use Cyprus as a base for direct investments either for supplying expanding markets in the region and the EU countries".

Before the opening of the seminar President Clerides met with the Chairman of the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CC PIT) Yiu Xia Song.

Welcoming the Cypriot President, Yiu Xia said President Clerides' six-day visit to China shows that he attaches great importance to the promotion of bilateral, economic and trade exchanges. President Clerides extended his thanks "for the friendship exhibited and the positions taken by the Chinese government for developing friendly relations".

[02] Cyprus and China to boost bilateral relations

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Chinese Premier Zhu Rong Ji reconfirmed yesterday their government's wish to further upgrade bilateral relation in all fields.

During their meeting, Mr Zhu reaffirmed his country's support to efforts undertaken by UN Secretary-General for a solution to the Cyprus problem that will safeguard the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

Earlier in the day, President Clerides met with the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Mr Li Peng.

Welcoming President Clerides and the members of the official Cypriot delegation, Mr Peng said that the President's visit will contribute to further promoting bilateral relations and co-operation.

On his part, President Clerides described the two countries' relations as "excellent", noting that Cyprus established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, soon after its independence.

He added that one of the goals of his visit is to strengthen the excellent relations between Cyprus and China and to enhance economic, trade, tourism and cultural links.
