[01] Cyprus settlement should be based on a single sovereignty and
international personality and a single citizenship
"All the UN Security Council resolutions envisage a Cyprus settlement based
on a state of Cyprus with a single sovereignty and international personality
and a single citizenship and explicitly exclude union with any other
country or any form of partition or secession", Cyprus Government Spokesman
Costas Serezis stressed today.
In an official statement issued today, Government Spokesman expressed
regret at statements made yesterday by the Foreign Minister of Turkey Mr
Cem, who claimed that the idea of confederation is gaining ground on
account of Turkey's stand.
"Neither the Government of the Republic of Cyprus nor the Greek Cypriot
side in general will be carried away by Mr Cem's statements", Mr Serezis
said ,adding that Mr Cem "knows too well that he will not secure recognition
of a Turkish Cypriot state, for he has no international support in this
respect".
Replying to Mr Cem's allegation that "the Turkish Cypriot community has the
right to secession", Mr Serezis stressed that in this matter too he has no
international support, for if such a right were recognised, then the so-
called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" would also be recognised".
[02] President Clerides receives distinct decoration
President Glafcos Clerides was honoured with the highest decoration of the
Armenian Catholicacy of Cilicia, by his Holiness the Armenian Patriarch
Aram I, at a special ceremony yesterday.
Speaking during the ceremony for his decoration President Clerides
expressed his warmest thanks and appreciation for the great honour that the
Church of Armenians bestowed on him. He assured that the Government of
Cyprus and himself personally will continue, as they have done in the past,
to give every support and assistance to foster the progress and prosperity
of the Armenian Community in Cyprus.
