[01] New Ambassadors for Vietnam and Afghanistan

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received the credentials of the new Ambassadors of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and of Afghanistan, at separate formal ceremonies at the Presidential Palace yesterday.

Presenting his credentials the Vietnamese Ambassador Mr Cong Minh said that his country welcomed the goodwill of the Cypriot Government to reduce tensions on the island. He pointed out that Vietnam supports the peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN resolutions on Cyprus, and the withdrawal of all foreign troops and military bases from the island.

Presenting his Letters of Credence, the new Ambassador of Afghanistan Mr Abdul Wanhab Assefi said his country was grateful for the friendly position of Cyprus in efforts to find peace in Afghanistan. He promised to do all he can to expand the good relations between the peoples of the two countries, adding that there are further grounds to strengthen these ties in different fields, including trade and economy.
