[01] Government promises that desalination will solve water problem

Cyprus cannot depend on the water reserves in the dams even though there has been plenty of water flow in them, and, Cyprus' Minister of Agriculture Costas Themistocleous has said.

Speaking after a helicopter tour over the island on Friday together with President Glafcos Clerides, Mr Themistocleous said the government's long term disalination programme will have to be implemented.

They toured the island's reservoirs, the desalination plant at Dhekelia, the proposed site for the second permanent plant near Larnaca airport; as well as the two villages designated as sites for two 'mobile' units.

"What remains to be discussed at the end of March, when there will be an overall picture of the year's flow, is whether the government will go ahead with the mobile desalination units", the Minister added.

He said the government's long term plan is that the permanent disalination units will solve the problem of drinking water before the end of the year 2000 and promised that all such restrictions will be lifted by then and that there will be continuous flow of water to all households.

[02] Turkey is responsible for implementing judgement in Loizidou case, says British Minister

The British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Ms Joyce Quin, has said that responsibility for implementing the judgement in the case of Loizidou v Turkey, currently under consideration by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, lies with Turkey.

Replying to a question tabled in the House of Commons on 3 March as to the present position of the case, Ms Quin said "Turkey has confirmed its wish to uphold the authority of the European Court of Human Rights, but has informed the Committee of the difficulties which, in its view, flow from the judgement".

"We have made clear to Turkey the need to respect the Court's judgement. We have reminded Turkey in the Committee of Ministers of their responsibilities in this respect, most recently on 9 February, and will continue to do so", she added.

The case of Loizidou v Turkey will next be considered in the Committee of Ministers on 30 March.

[03] Drop in consumer price index

The Consumer Price Index for February 1999 decreased by 2,29 units or 1,86 per cent to 120,74 units compared to 123,03 in the previous month, the Department of Statistics and Research has announced.

This is mainly due to decreases in the prices of certain clothing and footwear items due to sale discounts as well as to decreases in the prices of certain fresh fruit and potatoes.
