[01] Cyprus' accession to the EU is in the interest of all Cypriots, says Britain

British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Ms Joyce Quin reiterated last Wednesday her country's belief that "Cyprus' accession to the EU is in the interest of all Cypriots. We believe that some awareness is beginning to be emerging among the Turkish Cypriots that the European Union can help them", she said. Ms Quin, was replying to relevant questions on Cyprus, submitted during a session of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Commons.

Ms Quin also pointed out that Cyprus has achieved a lot of progress in adopting the Acquis Communautaire adding that "we certainly do not accept that anyone else outside the EU has a veto over Cyprus prospect of accession."

The British Minister also stressed that the prospect of Cyprus' accession to the EU offers a great opportunity for a solution to the Cyprus problem. "We hope that the prospect of accession will act as a stimulus in that direction", she said.

Ms Quin also referred to her country's efforts to help Cyprus' accession course, together with other EU partners, noting that Britain also supports the UN Special Representative in Cyprus, Dame Ann Hercus' efforts towards reaching a political settlement.
