[01] EU Presidency: Cyprus' accesion negotiations will contribute to the
search for a political settlement
The European Union considers that Cyprus' accession to the EU will prove
beneficial to both communities and will contribute to the consolidation of
peace on the island.
In a written reply to a question submitted by Greek EuroMP Alecos Alavanos
to the EU Austrian Presidency, the Austrian Deputy Foreign Minister ‹s
Ferrero Waldner stressed that the EU attaches great importance to the
participation of Turkish Cypriots in the negotiating team that conducts
Cyprus' accession negotiations.
Ms Waldner added that the EU believes that accession negotiations will
contribute to the search for a political settlement in Cyprus within the
framework of UN sponsored talks.
Moreover replying to a question by Greek EuroParliamentarian Ioannis
Theonas, the Austrian Presidency reiterated EU's commitment to a peaceful
political settlement and added that it staunchly supports UN Secretary
General's efforts for the establishment of a bizonal bicommunal federation
in Cyprus.
