  • [01] CMP member says identifying missing positive for Cyprus issue

Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Theophilos Theophilou has expressed certainty that the full investigation and determination of the fate of all missing persons would have a positive effect on efforts for the rapprochement and reconciliation of the two communities in Cyprus.

In statements, Theophilou said it would also have a positive impact on efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and would facilitate the implementation of a solution.

Theophilou noted that the issue of missing persons was an open wound on a personal level for the families of the missing persons and for the Cypriot society.

Cypriot Minister of Defence Photis Photiou visited Chinese navy frigate "Yancheng", which is docked at Limassol Port as part of an operation for the removal of Syria`s chemical weapons.

In statements, Photiou said the presence of the frigate sent the message that Cyprus is a factor of stability, safety and peace in the region, adding that this upgraded geopolitical role should be utilised properly to the benefit of Cyprus, both politically and financially.

Photiou, who was accompanied by Chinese Ambassador Liu Xinsheng, said this was the first time that a Chinese warship was visiting Cyprus, and assured that the Cypriot government would provide any facilities needed in order for the operation to be successful.
