  • [01] Cyprus Federation of America meeting focuses on crisis in Cyprus

The adverse financial situation in Cyprus and ways to support the country and its people in these trying times were the focus of the 41st meeting of the Cyprus Federation of America, which took place on Saturday in New York, with the participation of 108 delegates from 20 member organisations and the youth.

The meeting was addressed by Archbishop of America Demetrios, who briefed the delegates on his talks with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, as well as the decisions taken to assist the people of Cyprus, in cooperation with the Church of Cyprus.

During the meeting, Costas Tsentas was elected President of the Federation, a post held for the past ten years by Panicos Pananicolaou, who did not run for reelection.

[02] Sunday`s Cyprus-Benin Davis Cup game important for Cyprus

Sunday`s game between Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus and Alexis Klegou from Benin, for the men`s tennis second division of the Davis Cup, at the National Tennis Centre in Nicosia, will determine whether Cyprus will remain in the second division or not.

If Baghdatis manages to beat Klegou, he will secure not only Cyprus` presence in the second division but will reach the record set by Bjorn Borg from Sweden, who recorded 33 consecutive wins in the Davis Cup.

In Saturday`s game for the relegation play-offs of the Davis Cup, in the doubles, Marcos Baghdatis and Rares Cuzdriorean beat Alexis Klegou and Magloire Yakpa, giving Cyprus the 2-1 advantage in the Cyprus-Benin games.
