Chief Returning Office Andreas Assiotis said on Sunday that there had
been attempts over the past 48 hours to tamper with the electronic
systems of the Ministry of the Interior.
He noted that the measures taken and the means at the disposal of the
Ministry of the Interior effectively prevented any serious problems.
[02] Barroso assures President-elect he can count on his support
President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, has assured
President-elect Nicos Anastasiades that he can count on the continued
commitment of the European Commission to assist Cyprus to overcome the
challenges it faces.
Commenting on the result of the presidential elections in Cyprus,
Barroso said "in my own name and in the name of the European Commission,
I warmly congratulate Nikos Anastasiades on his election as the President
of Cyprus".
The Cypriot people, he said, "have given Mr. Anastasiades a strong mandate
to implement his programme of reform and to do what it takes to ensure
fiscal and financial sustainability".
