  • [01] Kurds to continue struggle for a democratic system, says Kurdish leader

President of the Confederation of Kurdish Associations in Europe, Ismet Kem, believes that a solution to the Kurdish issue is also a solution to the Cyprus problem, something which calls for the freedom of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The head of the largest Kurdish organization in Europe, in an interview with CNA said, speaking through an interpreter, that a solution to the Kurdish issue would benefit many nations in the Middle East, including Turkey and would help overcome the current economic crisis, bringing peace and stability throughout the Middle East.

"The solution comes through freeing Ocalan", said Kem, during a visit to Cyprus, who also referred to the International Initiative entitled "Freedom for Ocalan - Peace in Kurdistan" set up in 1999 with the participation of personalities from the legal profession, the academia, intellectuals and scientists as well as Nobel laureates and supporters of human rights. This initiative, said Kem, aims to inform citizens and collect signatures to persuade the Turkish government release Ocalan, who on 15th February 1999 was handed over to the Republic of Turkey following a clandestine operation.

The International Initiative regards itself as a multi-national peace initiative working for a peaceful and democratic solution of the Kurdish question with Kurds and Turks peacefully living together. The Initiative is committed to play its part by intense lobbying and public relations work. Regular publishing and a balanced policy towards the public are a central part of its work. Kem said the Initiative calls on all Cypriots and other nationals to express their support through the collection of signatures to free Ocalan and other political detainees in Turkey, noting that "freeing Ocalan would signal the start of democratization in Turkey and peace in Kurdistan".

[02] Irish EU Presidency to focus on stability, jobs and growth, says Irish PM

Stability, jobs and growth will be the focus of the Irish EU Presidency, said Wednesday before the European Parliament Plenary Prime Minister of Ireland, Enda Kenny. Presenting the priorities of the Irish EU Presidency, he said that "the deepest hurt is that of unemployment", adding that "we will prioritise the Youth Employment Package including the Youth Guarantee".

"Completing the Single Market, removing barriers to business, increasing trading opportunities and improving competitiveness are all critical in improving the environment for jobs", he pointed out. He also said that the Irish Presidency will work with all involved so that the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020 is agreed soon. As regards economic issues, he said that stability is needed, above all in the financial sector and the area of economic governance and referred to the legislative proposals that the Irish Presidency will promote in the next six months.

The Irish PM said that in matters of foreign policy, "we will work closely in support of the efforts of the High Representative / Vice President Ashton to strengthen the role of the European Union in bringing peace to troubled regions such as Syria, Iran, Mali and Somalia". Referring to trade, he said that Ireland sees real potential to increase Europe's trade with strategic partners. "We have high hopes for the opening of Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the US. We believe the time is right to do so", he pointed out.
