  • [01] Baghdatis reaches last eight in Brisbane International

    Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has beaten German Florian Mayer (28th in ATP Ranking) in straight sets, to reach the quarterfinals in the Brisbane International for the third year in a row.

    Baghdatis beat Mayer 6-4, 6-2 and will go on to face France's Gilles Simon (16th in ATP Ranking) who beat Colombian Alejandro Falla, for a place in the semifinals.

    [02] European Commission opens the European Year of Citizens

    The European Commission will open the European Year of Citizens 2013 on January 10th, at an event to take place at the Rotunda of Dublin City Hall, in the presence of Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Vice-President Viviane Reding Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and Minister for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton.

    This European Year comes at a critical juncture in European integration as 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of EU Citizenship, which was introduced by the Maastricht Treaty in 1993, and it is also one year before the European Parliament elections.

    Over 200 citizens from Dublin will participate in an open debate with Europe`s leaders on the future of the European Union. The Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore and Irish MEPs from the region will also participate in the debate.

    [03] Unemployment rises to 12.1% in the 3rd quarter of 2012

    Unemployment rate reached 12.1% of the labour force during the 3rd quarter of 2012, compared to the previous quarter of 2012, the Statistical Service of Cyprus announced.

    According to the results of the Labour Force Survey, which is carried out in accordance with a European Union Regulation, the unemployment rate for men was 12.3% and 11.8% for women. Unemployment recorded an increase to 12.1% from the previous quarter of 2012, when it was 11.3% (12.1% men, 10.4% women) and from the corresponding quarter of 2011 when it was 7.8% (7.6% men and 7.9% women).

    The unemployment rate for young persons aged 15-24 amounted to 26.4% of the labour force of the same age group recording an increase 25.9% from the previous quarter of 2012, and from the corresponding quarter of 2011, 22,2%.

    [04] Trips abroad by Cypriots down by 4.5% in November

    Trips abroad by Cypriot residents declined by 4.5% in November 2012, reaching 66.619 compared with 66.768 in November 2011, figures released today by Cyprus' Statistical Service show.Áccording to results of the Passengers Survey, the bulk of the residents that traveled abroad opted for Greece as their destination marking an increase of 4.4%. Trips to Greece amounted to 22,250 whereas trips to the United Kingdom increased by 10%, reaching 17,921.

    Trips to Russia declined by 30.1% reaching 3,162 compared with 4,524 in the corresponding month of 2011. In terms of age, the majority of trips were made by the age group of 25-44 years (54.6%), followed by the age group of 45-64 (28.6%) and by the group of 15-14 years (12%).

    A total of 65.5% of the trips were made for holiday purposes, followed by business purposes with 27.9%, while 3% of the trips were made by students and 3.6% for other reasons.
