this week Apostolos Andreas [01] CBC: Firm to assess Pimco`s due diligence review to be announced this weekThe Central Bank of Cyprus is expected to announce this week the firm which will assess the due diligence review, carried out by the US-based global investment management firm Pimco, to determine the capital needs of the Cypriot financial sector.As part of Cyprus' application for financial assistance by the EU bailout mechanism, the Central Bank has commissioned Pimco to carry out a due diligence review of the credit portfolios of the three Cypriot banks, a sample of the Cooperative Credit Institutions as well as two Greek subsidiaries operating in Cyprus. The preliminary results were submitted on December 7 to the steering committee, comprising representatives of the Cypriot authorities, the European Commission, the ECB, the European Banking Authority and the IMF as an observer. CBC Spokeswoman Aliki Stylianou told CNA that the CBC examines the legal terms of the tender. A total of six firms have applied for the assessment work."We are committed to implementing certain procedures, which because of the Christmas holidays have delayed the selection process," she explained, adding that the firm will be announced next week.Stylianou noted that the CBC is responsible for selecting the firm which will assess the assumptions and methodology used by Pimco to calculate the banking sector`s capital needs, recalling that Pimco was selected by the Steering Committee. [02] Archbishop says the Church is ready to begin restoration of Apostolos AndreasThe Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos has blamed Turkey for the lack of progress in plans to restore of Apostolos Andreas Monastery in the Turkish occupied area of Karpasia. Speaking to the press he underlined that the Church is ready to begin restoration of the Monastery, according to the study prepared by the University of Patras and has been made available to the Turkish Cypriots, "but they are not proceeding with it". "Over the last three years we have called on the UN and the UNDP to begin the restoration of the Monastery as soon as possible and we have told them that we will assume the cost, but unfortunately they do nothing" Archbishop said, adding that "the Church of Cyprus is not to be blamed for this". He went on to say that "they have been finding excuses that the Turkish army will not accept it".He also called on the Turkish side to show respect of religious symbols and monuments. [03] Cypriot researcher is awarded Marie Curie EU grantA research proposal by Cypriot Researcher Artemi Georgiou has ranked 13th out of a total of 912 submissions for funding in the EU.According to a University of Cyprus press release the project "Archaeological Investigations of the Extra - Urban and Urban Landscape in Eastern Mediterranean centers: A case - study of Palepaphos" has been awarded total funding of 100,000 euro for the period 2013 - 2017 by the Marie Curie Awards Career Integration Grants. The University was graded with 4.8/5 on its suitability to support the implementation of the project. In a period of crisis when disciplines such as archaeology are usually set aside achieving such a grant is a "huge success", the press release says. [04] Irish MPs call on Ankara to work for Cyprus solutionTurkey's accession course cannot proceed further without a solution to the Cyprus problem, Irish Parliamentarians have pointed out.The remarks were made during a parliamentary session in Ireland's Parliament on Turkey's accession course, in the presence of Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and chief negotiator in accession talks with the Union, Egemen Bagis.Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st. Cyprus, which joined the EU in May 2004, assumed the EU Presidency for the first time in July this year.During Cyprus' EU Presidency Turkey, which aspires to join the bloc, refused to have any kind of relations with the Presidency, an attitude that was condemned by all EU institutions and many of Cyprus' EU partners. According to an official statement issued today by the Press and Information Office in Nicosia, the Irish MPs also noted that the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from Cyprus' northern Turkish occupied part as well as the withdrawal of all Turkish settlers are prerequisites for the continuation of Turkey's membership talks.Referring to the UN-led direct talks for a political settlement in Cyprus, MPs noted that the negotiations should carry on from where they were left by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. [05] Trips abroad down by 4.5% in NovemberTrips abroad by Cypriot residents declined by 4.5% in November 2012, reaching 66.619 compared with 66.768 in November 2011, figures released today by Cyprus' Statistical Service show.Áccording to results of the Passengers Survey, the bulk of the residents that traveled abroad opted for Greece as their destination marking an increase of 4.4%. Trips to Greece amounted to 22,250 whereas trips to the United Kingdom increased by 10%, reaching 17,921.Trips to Russia declined by 30.1% reaching 3,162 compared with 4,524 in the corresponding month of 2011. In terms of age, the majority of trips were made by the age group of 25-44 years (54.6%), followed by the age group of 45-64 (28.6%) and by the group of 15-14 years (12%). A total of 65.5% of the trips were made for holiday purposes, followed by business purposes with 27.9%, while 3% of the trips were made by students and 3.6% for other reasons.
