  • [01] By spring 2014 a clearer picture on oil reserves, Minister tells CNA

By spring 2014 we will know whether there are oil reserves in block 12, Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Giorgos Lakkotrypis has said.

Speaking to CNA from Brussels, Lakkotripis was cautious on press reports that block 12, may carry oil reserves estimated between 1.2 and 1.4 billion barrels.

"The estimates on natural gas deposits are being gradually confirmed and consequently one could reasonably say the prospects for oil are good," he said. Noting that Noble carried out three dimensional seismic surveys in block 12 the findings of which are being analysed, Lakkkotrypis said the results will be known by spring of 2014. "Then we will have a more complete picture on the existence of oil but this will only be confirmed after a drilling will be carried out," he added.

[02] Foreign Ministry issues travel advice for South Sudan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advice for the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus who are either permanent residents, are travelling or intend to visit South Sudan.

According to the Ministry, the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, who are permanent residents, visitors or who intend to travel to South Sudan, are advised to avoid all travelling.

Cypriot citizens are advised to limit their movement and monitor news reports (international and local) for any developments, and to follow the instructions of the local Authorities.

[03] Minister secures more fruits and vegetables for Cypriot schools

Cyprus secured increased quantities of fruits and vegetables to be made available in schools in Cyprus. The European Commission also committed to increase funding for milk to pupils.

The relevant decisions were taken during the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, on December 16 and 17, in the presence of Cypriot Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kougialis.

The Council also adopted the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, signed by the Council's Chair, the Minister of Agriculture of Lithuania. Discussions on CAP reform started during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, in the second half of 2011 and continued during the succeeding Danish, Cyprus and Irish EU Presidencies.

Kougialis secured an annual budget increase for the promotion of fruits and vegetables in schools, from 175 thousand euros to 290 thousand.

[04] Coops to appoint new CEO in the next days

The Cooperative Central Bank will appoint its new CEO in the next days, President of the Committee of the CCB Nicolas Hadjiyiannis told CNA.

The Cooperative Credit Institutions have been nationalized by 99% following a 1.5 billion capital injection it received by the state, which last March agreed with the Troika (EC, ECB and the IMF) on €10 billion bailout which also featured the conversion of 47.5% of deposits over €100,000 in a bid to rescue its largest bank, whereas Cyprus Popular Bank, the island`s largest lender, has been wound down.

The CCB has assigned Egon Zehnder to select a number of candidates for the job.

"We are in the short list of five candidates," Hadjiyiannis told CNA. The new CEO will implement the restructuring plan, one of the preconditions for the capital injection, that will see the reduction of the CCIs operating in Cyprus from 93 to 18.
