[01] Énterior Ministry sets schedule for February's Presidential Elections
The Ministry of Interior has set a schedule for the Presidential Elections
of February 2013, said Monday Chief of Central Electoral Service Demetris
Demetriou.
The election is set for February 17, followed by a run off on February 24,
if no candidate is elected from the first round. The main presidential
hopefuls are main opposition Democratic Rally President (DISY) Nikos
Anastasiades, Former Minister of Health Stavros Malas, backed by the
ruling AKEL party and Former Minister of Commerce and Foreign Affairs
in the period 2003-2006 Giorgos Lillikas, running as independent.
Demetriou told CNA that on January 4, the elections will be announced
in the official state gazette by order of the Interior Minister Eleni
Mavrou, and on the same day the Chief Returning officer and other
election officers will be appointed.
[02] GAC Council to prepare EU Summit on the MFF 2014-2020
Tuesday's EU General Affairs Council, under the Cyprus EU Presidency,
will prepare the extraordinary European Council on 22 and 23 of November
on the EU multi-annual financial framework (MFF) for 2014-2020, on the
basis of draft conclusions.
The conclusions will replace the MFF "negotiating box" while keeping its
structure and function, i.e. to outline the main elements and options,
hereby facilitating the negotiations and constituting the basis of
an agreement.
The Council, which will be chaired by Cypriot Deputy Minister for European
Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis, will try to reach, in public deliberation,
a partial general approach - a political agreement of the Council pending
the first-reading position of the European Parliament- on further elements
of the Cohesion Policy legislative package for 2014-2020, which would
complement the general approaches agreed in April, June and October.
