  • [01] Cyprus problem and economy discussed between Cypriot parties

Delegations of the Greek Cypriot Social Democrats Movement EDEK and Turkish Cypriot parties New Cyprus and United Cyprus, who met here Monday, discussed the Cyprus problem and the economy.

EDEK leader Yiannakis Omirou referred to the long-standing relations of his party with the two Turkish Cypriot parties, noting that they have often cooperated with a view to stress the need to solve the Cyprus problem on the basis of UN resolutions and European law and values.

He noted that they agree on the fundamental principles for the settlement of the Cyprus problem, which are the termination of the military occupation by Turkey, the unity of the country, the people, the institutions and the economy as well as the full respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the legal inhabitants of the Republic of Cyprus.

[02] Cyprus marks Remembrance Day with event in Nicosia

An event was organised in Nicosia on Monday to mark Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day), honouring the 20 million who died during the 1st World War and Cypriots who perished during the 2nd World War.

At exactly 11.00 in the morning a two minute silence was observed.

The event is organised every year by the Cyprus World War Two Association at the memorial of the 2nd World War.

[03] Last chance for Conciliation Committee to agree on EU 2013 budget

The Conciliation Committee, composed of the 27 members of the Council and an equal number of members of the European Parliament, has a last chance to reach an agreement on the proposed 2013 EU budget.

Negotiations between the member states and the EP on the 2013 budget reached a deadlock in October. As a result, the Cyprus EU Presidency and the EP decided to mandate the Conciliation Committee with finding an agreement on the 2013 EU budget. According to the EU Treaty, the deadline for reaching an agreement expires 21 days after the green light was given to the Conciliation Committee, that is Tuesday the 13th.

The Council`s position amounts to EUR 132.70 billion in payments, corresponding to an increase of 2.79% compared to 2012. The EP asked for a 6.82% increase in payments to bring the total amount to EUR 137.90 billion. The Commission proposed an increase of 6.85% to EUR 137.92 billion.
