by crisis
European Commissioner responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development
Dacian Cioloş has warned that if the budget of the Common Agriculture
Policy is affected by the economic crisis, then the dynamism of the
agricultural productive sector will be suspended.
Speaking at the Conference of the Chairpersons of the Agriculture
Committees of the EU member states, organized by the House of
Representatives in the context of the parliamentary dimension of the
Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Cioloş elaborated
on the main aspects of the CAP reforms for the period 2014-2020. With
regard to the current budget allocation system among member states,
he noted that there are divergences due to historic differences.
Cioloş underlined the need to equalize direct payments in the framework
of readjustment period. Furthermore, he reiterated the proposal of the
Commission to link 30% of the direct payments allocated to the farmers
with the adoption of environmentally friendly practices. Cioloş stressed
the need for the use of new tools that will take into consideration the
new situation due to the financial crisis.
