  • [01] GAC Ministers reach preliminary agreement on Cohesion Policy

A preliminary agreement on the new legislative package for Europe's Cohesion Policy for 2014-2020 was reached Tuesday at the General Affairs Council, in Luxembourg, under the Cyprus EU Presidency.

The partial general approach was reached on seven thematic blocs, namely, territorial development, European territorial cooperation, financial issues, management and control systems, information and communication, technical assistance and country specific recommendations and indicators.

"This is an important achievement for the Cyprus Presidency", Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Andreas Mavroyiannis, said Tuesday.

[02] EMU reinforcement to be based on democratic legitimacy and accountability

The reinforcement of the EMU architecture, through a fiscal and banking union should be in line with the principles of democratic legitimacy and accountability, notes the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC) in its Contribution, adopted Tuesday, during the plenary meeting of the XLVIII COSAC, in Nicosia.

The meeting was hosted by the Cyprus House of Representatives, in the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Cyprus EU Presidency. COSAC acknowledges the need to complement and strengthen the existing economic and monetary union and supports the reinforcement of the EMU architecture that will secure the prevention, management and resolution of crises.

It is noted that "the deepening of the EMU will mark a new stage in the process of the European integration". Moreover, it is noted that the European Parliament and the national parliaments should play a crucial role in this respect.

[03] SCORE Index to be developed in Cyprus

Ten leading peace and reconciliation specialists from six different countries, who have been brought together by the "Cyprus 2015: research and dialogue for a sustainable future", are to develop the first ever "Social Cohesion and Reconciliation (SCORE) Index".

A Press release issued here Tuesday said that as a statistical tool, the SCORE Index is meant to be a road-map for NGOs, authorities, the donor community and other relevant actors to measure and assess the state of reconciliation in divided societies.

To this end, the tool will assist decision makers in adapting strategies and mobilise their resources more effectively in post-conflict environments, it adds.

[04] Minister Sylikiotis participates in launch event for the Single Market Week in Brussels

As part of the 20th anniversary of the European Single Market, a Single Market Week takes place from 15 to 20 October 2012 with events organized in cities across the 27 Member States of the European Union.

The Single Market Week Launch Event took place Monday at the European Parliament in Brussels. Cypriot Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis and EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier participated in the launch event.

The single market, which is sometimes also called the internal market, is the EU project that created free trade within the EU. It is one of the most significant symbols of European integration.
