  • [01] Juvenile delinquency on the rise in Cyprus, says Commissioner

Juvenile delinquency is rising, said Leda Koursoumba, Commissioner for Children's Rights in Cyprus, noting that there should be juvenile courts to handle such cases.

She also said that the state should address the reasons that led children to such behaviour. Addressing the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC) 16th annual conference, taking place today and tomorrow, she said that the conference will examine issues which the 42 European independent children's rights institutions have very high on their respective national agendas, in the framework of the increasing number of international and regional human rights instruments promoting a child-friendly justice system.

[02] Commission: Cypriot economy`s competitiveness deteriorates

The Cypriot economy`s cost competitiveness has deteriorated significantly over the past decade, according to a European Commission overview of competitiveness in the 27 EU member states.

The Commission notes that labour productivity growth has been offset by the growth of prices and wages.

The challenge, it says, is to maintain and increase exports so as to keep the current account balance from posing serious long-term problems.

The agreement will be signed on the sidelines of the Single European Sky conference "A time for action".
