  • [01] House President meets Chairwoman of Confederal Group of UEL

The UN-backed direct talks for a solution to the Cyprus problems reached an impasse due to the Turkish intransigent stance, Cyprus House President Yiannakis Omirou has said.

Omirou received on Wednesday Gabriele Zimmer, Chairwoman of the Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left who is in Cyprus to chair the Group's "working days" held in Nicosia. Expressing gratitude over the Group's principled positions on the Cyprus problem, Omirou briefed Zimmer on the stalemate in the talks for a Cyprus solution, highlighting that the stalemate is attributed to the Turkish intransigent stance.

The House President underlined that Cyprus remains committed to reaching a federal settlement on the basis of the UN resolutions and the values and principles the European Union is founded on. Omirou also briefed Zimmer on the Turkish threats with regard to Cypriot natural gas explorations in its Exclusive Economic Zone, noting that Cyprus' rights are stemming from the international and European law and namely the UN convention on the law of the sea, as well as Ankara's denial to recognize the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

On her part, Zimmer described the Turkish stance against Cyprus as unacceptable, calling for pressures for the change in the Ankara's policy.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Dr Edmond Panariti, will pay an one-day official visit to Cyprus Thursday, at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis.

An official statement said Panariti's visit is a follow-up to Dr Kozakou-Marcoullis' visit to Tirana, last July, and is held in the framework of the significance attached by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU to the European perspective of the countries of the Western Balkans. During his visit, Panariti will hold extensive talks with his Cypriot counterpart, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Albania's European perspective, bilateral relations' issues, the Cyprus problem, Turkey's threats against the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus to explore and exploit its natural resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone and the volatile situation in Syria will be among the issues on the agenda for discussion.

After their meeting, the two Foreign Ministers will hold a joint Press conference and a working lunch hosted by Dr Kozakou-Marcoullis in honour of her Albanian counterpart will follow.
