[01] Mavroyiannis meets Assistant Secretary of State in Washington
Deputy Minister for European Affairs Ándreas Mavroyiannis met Assistant
Secretary of State Philip Gordon in Washington on Thursday.
Mavroyannis briefed the US official on Cyprus' EU Presidency which begins
July 1st, including its stance towards the Turkish government, which does
not recognize the Republic of Cyprus and has said that it will freeze
its relations with the EU when Cyprus assumes the rotating Presidency.
They also discussed energy issues and the current developments on
the Cyprus issue. The economic crisis in the Eurozone was also on
the agenda. Diplomatic sources told CNA that the US official showed
understanding as regards the Cyprus approach on the next steps of the
UN Secretary General in the direct talks.
