[01] House resolution condemns destruction of cultural heritage by TurkeyThe Cypriot House of Representatives adopted Thursday a resolution, in which it condemns once more the destruction of Cyprus` cultural heritage in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, urging the international community to undertake its responsibilities.The resolution calls upon the European Union to end any discussion on the opening of the EU – Turkey negotiating chapter on culture, until Turkey stops the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic. The House also calls upon the Cypriot government to intensify its efforts, in coordination with the Parliament, the Church of Cyprus and other competent authorities, to strengthen its enlightenment campaigns to protect and repatriate Cyprus' cultural heritage. It recalls that the Cypriot authorities continue to preserve Turkish Cypriot monuments which are situated in the government controlled areas and condemns ``the persistent refusal of the illegal occupation regime to allow the Republic of Cyprus to carry out the necessary work for the restoration of archaeological and religious monuments, which are threatened with collapse, despite repeated representations by the State and the Church of Cyprus. `` [02] Cyprus hosts HOTREC General AssemblyCyprus hosts the 64th General Assembly of HOTREC, which is the umbrella association of national trade associations representing the hotels, restaurants, cafes and similar establishments in Europe.The General Assembly takes place in the southern coastal town of Limassol. Addressing the delegates, Haris Loizides, President of the Cyprus Hotel Association, said that by recently becoming a full member of HOTREC, the Cyprus Hotel Association aspires to contribute to the pan-European goal and feels that Cyprus' cooperation with its European tourism partners is strengthened. Referring to the upcoming Cypriot presidency of the EU, he noted it constitutes yet another challenge for Cyprus, "a test to see whether we can operate with a vision, on the basis of collaboration between the public and private sectors". In his speech, Kent Nystrom, President of HOTREC, recalled when he was in Cyprus in 1972, saying that he was a tour operator concentrated in the Famagusta area, which is now occupied by the Turkish troops since 1974. "I left the island one week just before the war broke out. So I have a special feeling and interest for Cyprus and of course I know from that time that our colleagues in Cyprus are very professional in the area of tourism and especially in my sector hotel and restaurants", he concluded.
