[01] Ministers brief European Official on Cyprus’ EU PresidencyMinisters of Interior and Justice, Neoklis Sylikiotis and Loukas Louka, briefed on Monday the Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) Morten Kjaurem on the priorities of Cyprus’ EU Presidency in the second half of 2012.Speaking after the meeting, which took place at the Ministry of Interior in Nicosia, the Minister said that the European official was briefed on Cyprus’ priorities and actions, which include solidarity issues, the social dimension of the Presidency, the aim for a better Europe, trafficking as well as migration and asylum issues which include the Common European Asylum System. He said it was very important to always incorporate in EU policies and strategies respect of fundamental human rights, stressing also the significant role the Agency plays and the cooperation it has established with the member states and the bodies of the EU. Justice Minister Loukas Louka said that in order to have a successful EU Presidency, Cyprus needs to cooperate and collaborate with the FRA, adding that human rights are high on the agenda of the Cypriot Presidency. He also said that during the Cyprus’ Presidency, various conferences on human rights and domestic violence will take place. [02] Martens congratulates Anastasiades for electionEuropean People`s Party (EPP) President Wilfried Martens has congratulated Nicos Anastasiades for his election as the candidate for President of Cyprus by the Executive Council of his party DISY.Saying that for the past 15 years, he had worked very closely with Nicos Anastasiades, in the framework of the EPP Summit of heads of state and government and party leaders, Martens pointed out that during these years, Nicos Anastasides has worked tirelessly to promote Cyprus and the Cyprus problem in Europe. “Therefore, it not surprising that he is highly regarded and respected by our 16 presidents and prime ministers in the European Council,`` he said Martens added that Nicos Anastasiades is an important Cypriot asset in Europe and an important European asset in Cyprus. He also said that Europe`s leaders “still fondly remember and appreciate the statesmanship and European commitment which he displayed in securing the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in the Cypriot parliament 4 years ago”.
