  • [01] ELECTRICITY - PURCHASE - COST

Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has issued a cheque for 4,5 million euro that was handed to Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) last week for the power supply from the occupied areas, following the destruction of Vassiliko Power Plant, after the blast at the naval base on July 11th.

Arrangements for power supply from the occupied areas were made so as not to entail the upgrading of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, since the issue concerns a private initiative by CCCI to buy electricity and re-sell it to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

Deputy EAC Spokesman Yiannis Tsouloftas told CNA on Wednesday that the cheque was handed over to CCCI Chairman Manthros Mavromatis and that our understanding is that he was to give it to the suppliers the following day.

He added that our agreement with CCCI ends in August and we have discussed the possibility of further renewal, however so far nothing has been signed.

    [02] HEALTH MIN. - INNOVATION

Minister of Health Stavros Malas will be presiding over a meeting of experts on Wednesday in Brussels on issues of innovation in the health sector.

According to a press release, Cyprus, at the initiative of the Minister, has undertaken to draft a strategic plan for the incorporation of modern innovation in health systems on a European level.

The plan will be presented at a conference to be held in Cyprus in the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU, and will be part of the conclusions of the Ministers` Council.

The conference on collaborative innovation in health and the EU strategy up till 2020 will be attended by senior officers of the European Commission, state officers from member states, large companies active in all health fields, and researchers.

    [03] HOTELS - OCCUPANCY

Hotel occupancy rate in Cyprus during high season reaches in many cases up to 100%, Director General of the Cyprus Hotel Association Zacharias Ioannides told CNA.

Moreover, Ioannides said that the Russian market continues to gain more ground in Cyprus tourism, with arrivals in July from Russia showing an increase of 62%, compared to the same month last year.

The high occupancy rate of hotels and tourism accommodation applies in all of Cyprus districts, Ioannides added, in both coastal and mountain resorts.

He said that the overall outlook for this summer also appears to be more positive than a year before, due to the increase recorded in foreign tourist arrivals, as well as due to the boost in domestic tourism.
