  • [01] FM - MADRID - VISIT

    Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou will visit Madrid on Friday April 1, where he will meet his Spanish counterpart, Trinidad Jimenez.

    During the meeting the two Ministers will discuss bilateral relations between Cyprus and Spain as well as Euro-Turkish and EU NATO relations. Kyprianou will brief his Spanish counterpart about the current phase of the Cyprus problem. They will also discuss international and regional issues of mutual interest such as recent developments in North Africa and the Middle East.

    The Foreign Minister will address an event at the Elcano Royal Institute, an important think tank of Spain.

    [02] FINMIN - BANKING SYSTEM

    The monitoring of the banking system in Cyprus is the exclusive responsibility and main activity of the Central Bank, which is an independent authority, and the Government`s position is that the banking system in Cyprus is robust, Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis notes in an announcement about the rating by Standard and Poor`s.

    ``International credit rating company Standard and Poor`s downgraded the creditworthiness of the Republic of Cyprus today from Á/Á-1 to Á-/Á-2 with a negative horizon,`` Stavrakis says.

    He adds that ``the foreign company cites the exposure of Cypriot banks to Greek bonds and the large size of the banking system as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product as the reason for the downgrading.``

    [03] CYPRUS - MONGOLIA - MEMORANDUM

    Cyprus and Mongolia signed Wednesday two memorandums of co-operation and one agreement. The Memorandums and the Agreement were signed within the framework of further promoting relations between the two countries states an official announcement.

    The Agreement concerns the abolition of visas for diplomatic and official passport bearers between the two countries and it was signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by Head of the Directorate for Schengen, Consular Affairs and Crisis Management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andreas Zinonos.

    A Memorandum of Co-operation was signed between the Cyprus Olympic Committee and the Mongolian Olympic Committee. On behalf of Cyprus the Memorandum was signed by the Committees Secretary General Charalambos Lottas. Furthermore, a Memorandum of Co-operation was signed between the two countries Stock Exchanges. On behalf of Cyprus the Memorandum was signed by Cyprus Stock Exchange President Giorgos Koufaris.
