President Christofias, who laid the foundation stone of the Neapolis Smart EcoCity project, in Pafos, said that such business projects aim at making Cyprus an international service center and reassured that the government supports such initiatives.

Referring to bilateral agreements of Cyprus with foreign countries, the President stressed that the highlight has been the signature of a great number of agreements to promote and explore economic relations between Cyprus and Russia during the recent successful state visit of the Russian President to Cyprus.

In addition, he pledged that the government will spare no effort to proceed to the signature of more bilateral agreements with other countries in an effort to promote its development strategy and expand its economic relations.

The government, he said, will work for the implementation of great infrastructure projects, so that the necessary preconditions are created that would contribute to the attraction of great investments.

He noted that the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency works towards attracting foreign investments in Cyprus, adding that the government is committed to offer political and economic stability and maintain a favourable business environment.

Referring to the Pafos district, he said that the government promotes a series of projects, such as a marina, two main roads that will connect the Pafos airport with the Coral Beach area and Pafos with Polis Chrysohous, as well as projects in the field of culture.

As regards the Neapolis Smart EcoCity project, in Pafos, he said that this is a project which promotes Cyprus and which will attract the interest of foreign investors who have the knowledge and experience in the construction of such projects and the management of trade centres.

He added that the project constitutes a model of complex development not only for Cyprus but also for the whole Southeastern Mediterranean.

The project will gradually create new jobs, attract international businesses and boost state revenue. It will also upgrade the culture life and the quality of life of Pafos and Cyprus in general, the President said.

The project will host a hospital of high specifications, a university for 3000 students with halls of residence, a model health park with a health center, rehabilitation of patients, an oncology center etc, a research and development centre, a business park, a hotel, flats and villas.

The President said that the Neapolis Smart Eco-City will adopt innovative technologies on water, lighting and management issues within the framework of the creation of a smart ecological city.

[02] PRESIDENT CYPRUS EDUCATION

President Christofias, who inaugurated Saturday the Neapolis University in Pafos, said that in a period, described as the worst international economic crisis of the last decades, the governments expenditure for the education sector has been increased from 7,1% of the GDP in 2007 to 7,8% in 2009, which proves the importance the government attributes to education.

Referring to the education reform, he said that the government has implemented its commitment to expand state aid for students, has made those necessary steps for the establishment of a Medical Faculty at the University of Cyprus and has begun discussion with the private universities to advance them to non-profit organizations.

The President said that ultimate goal of the state is to meet the educational needs in the country and help Cyprus become a regional educational and research center of high standards that would attract internationally renowned academics, researches and students.

[03] IMMIGRANTS - NATIONAL ACTION PLAN

The National Action Plan, which has been approved this month by the Council of Ministers, is based on the relevant European directives, the eleven Common Basic Principles for the integration of immigrants, the Common Integration Program, the Stockholm Program and the Immigration and Asylum Pact, the Minister told reporters during a press conference.

Presenting the National Action Plan 2010-2012 for the integration of immigrants, who legally reside in Cyprus, the Minister said that the plan informs immigrants about all aspects concerning their social integration in Cyprus.

The plan, he added, comprises eight priority aspects, which include information, service and transparency, employment, education and the learning of the Greek language, health, improvement of the quality of life and social protection, culture and basic elements of political and social reality and participation.

[04] CYPRUS WORLD KARATE CUP

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 1st WSKF World Karate Cup, in Nicosia, Paschalides said that such activities contribute to the objective of reducing seasonality and at the same time help to diversify and enrich our tourist product.

Athletes and escorts from more than 20 countries participate in the 1st World Karate Cup, which takes place in Nicosia, the Minister said, adding that the practice of karate invigorates the body, develops coordination, quickens reflexes, builds stamina and helps to gain self-control.

Furthermore, he noted that sports activities provide an additional source of income to the local economy and contribute towards the establishment of Cyprus as a significant sports and tourist destination in Europe.
