  • [01] MINISTER IMMIGRANTS ACTION PLAN

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has presented the Cyprus` National Action Plan 2010-2012 for the integration of immigrants, who legally reside in Cyprus.

The National Action Plan, which has been approved this month by the Council of Ministers, is based on the relevant European directives, the eleven Common Basic Principles for the integration of immigrants, the Common Integration Program, the Stockholm Program and the Immigration and Asylum Pact, the Minister told reporters during a press conference Saturday.

Presenting the National Action Plan 2010-2012 for the integration of immigrants, who legally reside in Cyprus, the Minister said that the plan informs immigrants about all aspects concerning their social integration in Cyprus.

The plan, he added, comprises eight priority aspects, which include information, service and transparency, employment, education and the learning of the Greek language, health, improvement of the quality of life and social protection, culture and basic elements of political and social reality and participation.

Sylikiotis said that the action plan sets, for the first time, the framework of an organized, targeted and comprehensive plan for the integration of immigrants.

Noting the importance which the EU attributes to the integration of immigrants, the Minister said that the success of the action plan also depends on the cooperative spirit expected to be shown by the political parties, the local administration, employers, trade unions, religious organizations, womens organizations, NGOs, immigrants organizations, the Media and the civil society.

Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Soteroulla Charalambous, who was present at the press conference, said that the Ministry of Labour has published information brochures, in six languages, on the framework of labour relations in Cyprus and its legislations.

She also noted that the Ministry of Labour closely cooperates with the Embassies of foreign countries in Cyprus, which represent a great number of immigrants living in Cyprus, so that the necessary information goes to all interested people before arriving in Cyprus.

    [02] SPOKESMAN - LIMNITIS

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has given the residents of Tylliria area a breath of life through the opening of Limnitis checkpoint in the area, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

In statements to the Press, Stephanou said: The President of the Republic of Cyprus has offered to the long-suffering residents of Tylliria a strong breath of life, having succeeded in opening the Limnitis crossing point, which facilitates their movements on the island.

Stephanous remark were in response to reports that the Turkish Cypriot side objected to the dispatch of an invitation, by the UN, to EU Ambassadors and UN Security Council permanent members to the ceremony for the opening of Limnitis checkpoint, because the Greek Cypriot side had raised strong objections to the proposed presence of the so-called Turkish ambassador to the occupied part of Cyprus at the ceremony. As regards the invitations you should ask the UN which was responsible for the ceremony, he said, stressing that the Republic of Cyprus cannot accept that there is a Turkish ambassador in occupied Cyprus.

Replying to another question on the points of entry to the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, Stephanou said that it is a sovereign right of the Republic to determine which will be those points. It is the Republic of Cyprus, whom the sovereignty is violated by Turkey, that keeps all the ports and airports in the occupied areas of the island closed, because it cannot control them effectively due to the occupation, he added. Finally, he reiterated that this is a sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus.

    [03] EU COUNCIL MARKOULLIS TURKEY

Minister of Communications and Works Erato Kozakou Markoullis drew her EU counterparts attention to the illegal embargo imposed on Cyprus airplanes by the Turkish authorities on the air space Ankara and Constantinople (Istanbul). Addressing the Council of EU Ministers of Transport, Markoullis said that as a direct result of Turkeys behaviour Cypriot airplanes are forced to use Greek air space as the only available route from Nicosia to the European air space.

Markoullis reminded her counterparts that this illegal policy pursued by Turkey constitutes a clear violation of the International Air Transport Agreement and the Chicago Agreement of which both Cyprus and Turkey are signatories. It is also a flagrant violation of European Transport Policy basic principles and has important financial ramifications for both Cyprus and the EU, she pointed out.

The EU ought to put into play all political, legal and other available means to make Turkey stop the illegal embargo, she said, adding that it creates conditions of discrimination among European businesses and places one member state at a position of disadvantage in relation to other member states. Cyprus detailed informative document of the situation was included in the Councils official documents.
