[01] CYPRUS - SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Total scientific research and experimental development (R & D) in
Cyprus in 2008 is estimated at 73,4 mn euro which corresponds to 0,43%
of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to 70,1 mn or 0,44% of
the GDP in 2007 and 61,4 mn or 0,43% in 2006, on the basis of the
results of the ad hoc survey carried out by the Statistical Service
Despite the increase of 4,7% observed in R & D expenditure in 2008
relative to 2007, the share of the GDP of Cyprus devoted to R & D
activities continues to be low compared to other countries. For
example, the share of R & D expenditure to the GDP of the European
Union member states stands at 1,9% on average (ranging from 0,43% in
Cyprus, 0,47% in the Slovak Republic and 0,49% in Bulgaria to 3,73% in
Finland and 3,75% in Sweden).
By sector of performance, the higher education institutions accounted
for 32,1 mn or 43,7% of total R & D expenditure, the government for
16,8 mn or 22,9%, the business enterprises for 16,7 mn or 22,8% and the
private non-profit institutions for 7,8 mn or 10,6%. In the business
enterprise sector, computer and related activities constituted the
principal source of R & D activity, with a total R & D expenditure of
6,7 mn, while of particular importance was also the contribution of the
manufacturing industry (and particularly the manufacturers of chemicals
and chemical products) with 5,9 mn.
