  • [01] COMMUNITY LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKS

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, will meet on Monday afternoon, in the framework of direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

During their last meeting, which took place on Wednesday December 9, Christofias and Talat discussed economic issues.

Yasser Sabra, Coordinator of the UN Good Offices Mission, said after the last meeting that the leaders met tete-a-tete for an-hour-and-a-half and discussed economic matters.

The leaders will meet again on December 21.

President Christofias and Talat began talks in September 2008, under UN auspices, to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
