Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko has said that the official visit to Cyprus by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov aims at continuing the active political dialogue between Moscow and Nicosia on a broad agenda of bilateral and international issues. According to the Russian spokesman, relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus develop in an atmosphere of traditional friendship and mutual understanding`` and the two countries maintain high level political contacts.

``There are no political problems concerning our relations with Cyprus. The steady support of Cypriots from Russia in their efforts to achieve a just, comprehensive and viable settlement on the island facilitates the consolidation of mutually beneficial cooperation and traditions of friendship,`` he added, noting that ``Russia and Cyprus cooperate productively in various international organizations, such as the UN, OSCE, the Council of Europe.``

According to Russian statistics, the total volume of investment from Cyprus in Russia during 2008 was about 56.7 billion US dollars, an amount which represents 23.4% of the total foreign investments. Nesterenko said that Cyprus remains one of the most attractive tourist destinations for Russians and about 200,000 tourists from Russia visited Cyprus in 2008.
