  • [01] RUSSIAN FM - OFFICIAL VISIT - CYPRUS

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in Cyprus on Wednesday on a two-day official visit, during which he will have talks with the government.

During his visit here, Cyprus and Russia will sign the Programme on Cooperation between the two countries in the field of Science, Education and Culture for the period of 2009 2012 and approve the Plan of Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus for the period of 2010 - 2011.

Lavrov and his entourage will arrive at noon at Larnaca airport on a special flight from Moscow.

He will be met by the Under Secretary to the President of the Republic Titos Christofides, the Chief of Protocol of the Republic of Cyprus Ioanna Malliotis and the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav D. Shumskiy.

Later on he will have a meeting at the Presidential Palace with President Demetris Christofias, in the presence of the Cypriot and the Russian delegations. A working lunch hosted by President Christofias will follow.

In early afternoon, Lavrov will have a tete-a-tete meeting at the Foreign Ministry with Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou. Official talks will follow, attended also by their respective delegations.

[02] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - BERLIN WALL - ANNIVERSARY

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias will attend the events in the German capital, marking the 20th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has announced that President Christofias, during his meeting Monday with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, asked not to set a meeting for next Monday, so that he can participate in the Berlin events.

He added that November 11th, President Christofias will visit London where he will hold a meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Asked why President Christofias had changed his mind concerning his trip to Berlin, Stephanou said ``we have said that he has a full schedule``.

He went on to explain that ``taking into consideration the negotiations for the Cyprus issue and Turkeys efforts to blame the Greek Cypriot side for delaying tactics at the negotiations in an effort to use negotiations to exert pressure on Turkey ahead of its EU assessment in December, the Cypriot government wanted to be sure that there would be no meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader on Monday in order to be able to announce the Cypriot Presidents participation in the Berlin events``.

    [03] UNSG - GREECE - CYPRUS PROBLEM

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will discuss the Cyprus question, among other international issues, during his official visit to Greece where he arrived on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, Ban will meet Prime Minister and Foreign Minister George Papandreou, with whom he will also discuss other issues, including Skopje.

Ban is the first UN Secretary General who pays an official visit to Greece. He is currently visiting Athens to speak at the Global Forum on Migration and Development.
