[01] CYPRUS - UN - VIOLATIONS
Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Minas A.
Hadjimichael, addressing the Third Committee at the 64th Session of the
General Assembly, on human rights questions has said that despite the
plethora of Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on
Cyprus, and the efforts of the United Nations and the international
community, the violations of human rights in Cyprus continue to affect
the lives of the Cypriot people for more than 35 years now.
In his statement, Ambassador Hadjimichael said that Cyprus is fully
committed to the inclusive protection of human rights across the board
and the establishment of unconditional accountability for all human
rights abuses.
He said that this cannot be achieved solely through the establishment
of a comprehensive legal regime that defines the content of human
rights and creates obligations for States.
Ambassador Hadjimichael noted that while recognising the undisputed
role of the United Nations in the codification of human rights norms,
it is equally important for the Organisation to ensure the prevalence
of these norms in practice.
