[01] GAROYIAN MORPHOU RESOLUTIONActing President of the Republic, President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian, has forwarded to the Presidents of the Parliaments of the EU member states and Permanent Members of the UN Security Council a resolution of protest handed over to him by the Municipal Council of the Turkish-occupied town of Morphou, co-signed by other organized groups of the occupied Municipality.The resolution was handed over on the occasion of the 35th anniversary since Morphou was captured by the advancing Turkish troops in the August 16, 1974. According to an official announcement issued here Friday, Garoyian forwarded the resolution to the Presidents of the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. In his letter, the House President refers to the protest of the citizens of Morphou against the continued depravation of their fatherland by Turkish troops, which was imposed upon them as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion and subsequent occupation. Garoyian also recalls that the invasion and occupation have been repeatedly condemned through resolutions of the UN Security Council, the European Union and other international organizations. Moreover, he underlines Turkeys stance, which prevents substantial progress in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. He also urges foreign officials to exert their influence towards Ankara so that Turkey changes its intransigent stance and facilitates the achievement of a solution, which would reunite the people, Cyprus institutions and economy and guarantee fundamental and human rights of all its citizens. Cyprus, which entered the EU in 2004, has been occupied by Turkish troops since the summer of 1974. Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to reach a comprehensive solution reuniting the island, divided since 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation. The first phase of the talks was concluded this month and the second phase will begin on September 3. [02] ARCHBISHOP ECHR TURKEYArchbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has said that next month, the Church of Cyprus will resort to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to report Turkey for violation of its rights and usurpation of its property in the Turkish occupied areas.Speaking at Larnaka Airport on his return from Poland where he paid an official visit, the Archbishop said that the application against Turkey concerns the refusal of Turkey to allow both clergy and people to visit places of worship in the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus as well as Turkeys refusal to allow the maintenance of the churches and the use of the property of the Church. The Church has waited for 35 years and I think they are too many, the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church on the island said. He added that next month we will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights for a triple lawsuit against Turkey. [03] CYPRUS ROMANIA - BANKS - MOUThe National Bank of Romania and the Central Bank of Cyprus have recently updated the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed between them in 2002, expressing their mutual interest and willingness in promoting further the bilateral ties in the domain of supervision of credit institutions.According to a press release issued Friday by the Central Bank of Cyprus, ``the Memorandum of Understanding defines a general framework of mutual cooperation and exchange of information between the two supervisory authorities, for the purpose of facilitating the performance of their supervisory function as well as the effective supervision and regulation of credit institutions with cross border presence, in accordance with the respective national laws and regulations``. The updated Memorandum of Understanding has been signed on behalf of the National Bank of Romania, by its Governor, Mugur C. Isarescu and, on behalf of the Central Bank of Cyprus, by its Governor, Athanasios Orphanides, the press release concludes. [04] WPC VINE HARVESTThis years vine harvest in Cyprus is expected to be reduced by three million kilogrammes (kg) in comparison to 2008 according to Cyprus Wine Products Council (WPC) officer Andreas Kyriakides.In statements to CNA, Kyriakides said that grape harvest has already started as well as the delivery of wine grapes to the 50 wineries, which produce Cypriot wine. According to Kyriakides it is estimated that this year approximately 29 million kg of grapes will be collected from Cypriot vine yards, out of which approximately 19 million will be processed for wine production.
