Bakoyiannis was speaking after a meeting on foreign policy issues with the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis. In Cyprus a very difficult negotiation is continuing, she said, noting that at the same time Turkeys EU accession prospect will be assessed. Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] HEALTH MINISTRY - NEW FLU - VACCINATIONThe Ministry of Health has announced plans to buy sufficient quantities of the H1N1 new flu vaccine to cover 25% of the population, stressing at the same that vaccinations should not start before there are clinical trials to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Stella Michaelidou has said that the Ministry has already ordered vaccines to cover 25% of the population, pointing out that this is considered to be a very good percentage, given the situation in Cyprus. She didnt specify when the mass vaccinations wills start, but explained that they will first immunize high risk groups, according to specific criteria which are constantly being reviewed by the European Union and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Pregnant women and small children are considered to be priority groups, because they are under additional risks. However we must have very good clinical trials to give them the vaccine, she told reporters. As she explained, both quality and safety controls as well as the effectiveness of the vaccine are in progress and therefore mass vaccinations depend on the results of this process as well as on current and future evolution of the flu. The Ministry of Health expects that the flu vaccines will arrive in Cyprus between October 2009 and February 2010.
