Speaking to the press, Garoyian described the meeting as very useful, cordial and essential during which he briefed Abbas on the current situation in the ongoing direct negotiations taking place on the island, to help reach a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem.

Garoyian explained to Abbas that the dialogue carried out between the islands two communities faces problems due to Turkish intransigence.

He stressed the persistence of the Greek Cypriot side to achieve a functional and viable solution which will be based on UN resolutions, the principles and values of the European Union as well as on the High Level Agreements, clinched in the 1970s between the two communities which provide for a bizonal bicommunal federation.

[02] FM - MIDDLE EAST QUESTION

Kyprianou, who will visit Israel on Saturday, told CNA that he will meet his Israeli counterpart and other members of the Israeli government, as well as the opposition leader.

It will be a short visit, but it will give me the opportunity to discuss with my interlocutors bilateral relations, our positions and those of the EU on the Middle East peace process, he said.

Kyprianou noted that Cyprus firmly supports a settlement providing two states in the region, a Palestinian state and an Israeli state.
