  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TALKS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Thursday that he began discussion on security issues with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the context of UN-led direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.

Speaking on his return to the Presidential Palace after his meeting with Talat, President Christofias noted that ``the discussion on the issue of security began, the first views were presented by the leaders of the two communities and we will continue next week.``

Replying to questions, President Christofias said he is in consultation with the leaders of the political parties to convene the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem.

He added that the parties are fully briefed on the course of the negotiations at meetings of party leaders with the President, during meetings of the National Council or over the telephone. The President also noted that he was still expecting all the parties to submit their views on various aspects of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island.
