[01] DOWNER CYPRUS MEETINGSUN Secretary-General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer held a meeting Tuesday with Cyprus President Dementris Christofias.Downer, who is in Cyprus on his first visit to the island after his appointment by UNSG Ban Ki-moon as his Special Adviser on Cyprus, will later cross to the Turkish occupied areas to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. According to UN sources, Downer will have lunch with Presidential Commissioner and President Christofias aide on Cyprus, George Iacovou. On 17:30 he will meet with the Ambassadors of the UN Security Council`s permanent member-states to Cyprus. Yesterday, Downer had briefings with UNSG`s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun and met with other UN officials during which they reviewed the latest developments on the Cyprus problem in view of the commencement of full-fledged negotiations between Christofias and Talat on September 3 with a view to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem. Downer arrived to the island on Sunday in bid to ``discuss with the leaders how the United Nations can best assist the process,`` as UNSG`s Spokesperson Michele Montas announced on Friday. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS EDUCATIONAL REFORMCyprus President Demetris Christofias has stressed the need for speeding up the implementation of the Educational Reform which the new government has pledged to expand and deepen.The President was speaking at a meeting of the Council of Education held under his chairmanship and in the presence of the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou during which the members of the Council discussed the goals of the upcoming school year. [03] MINISTER OF INTERIOR ARTEMIDAThe rebuilding of Artemida community in Greece, which was badly hit during last summers catastrophic forest fires, will be concluded on May 2009.Speaking after a meeting of the Cyprus ministerial committee for the rebuilding of Artemida, Minister of the Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis, reassured that the rebuilding of Artemida will be concluded within the time frames. [04] FRENCH PRESIDENCY - CYPRUS CULTURAL WEEKCypruss cultural week as part of the European Cultural Month organized by the French presidency of the EU was launched on Monday in Paris.Ten Greek Cypriot and two Turkish Cypriot artists are presenting their work at seven sites in the French capital, providing a different happening each day of the week.
