  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - BRITISH OFFICIAL - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The United Kingdom stands ready to help the two leaders in Cyprus in their effort to reach a settlement, which will be by Cypriots for Cypriots.

This was the message conveyed by Foreign Office Director of European Political Affairs Antony Smith to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.

In statements after the meeting, Smith said ``we`ve had a very positive meeting with the President, following up on his visit to London when he signed an agreement with the Prime Minister.``

``The message that I`ve brought is that the United Kingdom stands ready to help the two leaders in their effort to reach a settlement, a settlement which will be by Cypriots for Cypriots, that the United Kingdom does not have any plan of its own,`` he added.

He noted that London`s objective ``is to be supportive and work with the two leaders to take the negotiating process forward. We very much hope that negotiations under UN auspices will be launched in September and look forward to helping as much as we can with that.``

Invited to say if a date for the start of negotiations is expected to be announced on July 25 when President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet, Smith said ``that`s a matter for the two leaders. We very much hope that that will be the next step.``

Christofias and Talat will meet for the fourth time since Christofias election to the presidency in February this year to review the progress achieved at discussions between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot experts, on various aspects of the Cyprus question, including territory, governance, the economy and property. The leaders will decide whether direct negotiations between them can begin

[02] LARNACA AIRPORT - BUS SERVICE

Cyprus main international airport at Larnaca, on the south coast, will, as of next week, have a bus service, linking it with the main towns.

The decision was taken by the government to help locals and visitors travel cheaply to and from the airport. The cost of the bus service to the capital Nicosia, in the centre, will be five euro.

The Larnaca Limassol trip (on the south) will cost seven euro but the cost of the Larnaca Pafos, on the west, has not been fixed yet.
