    The Republic of Cyprus is contributing 100,000 Euro to the reconstruction of the Palestinian Nahr el Bared refugee camp in Lebanon, Kornilios Korniliou, Foreign Ministers Office Director has said during the International Donors Conference, held on 23 June 2008, in Vienna under the Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plasnik auspices.

    According to an official announcement, speaking at the Conference on behalf of the Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou, Korniliou noted that the Republic of Cyprus has included Lebanon in its Strategy for Development Cooperation and added that between 2007-2011 and under the long-term commitment to support Lebanon, Cyprus will spend 1.1 million Euro for reconstructing projects in Lebanon.

    Korniliou also said that Cyprus is closely monitoring the developments in Lebanon, as the nearest to Lebanon EU member state and given the historical ties of friendship between the two states.

    Under the provisions of the Doha Agreement and with the election of President Suleiman, Lebanon is entering a new era of stability, he said and expressed the hope this latest development to contribute to the peace process in the Middle East.

    The Prime Minister of Lebanon Fouad Siniora, the Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, the Secretary General of the Arab League Amre Moussa and the EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Benita Ferrero Waldner, along with 60 Foreign Minister or officials and international organization representatives, participated to the Conference.

    The Palestinian Nahr El Bared refugee camp is situated near the city of Tripoli in Lebanon. Nahr El Bared was completely destroyed during the hostilities that lasted three month in 2007.

    The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the Government of Lebanon and the World Bank, plan to rebuild a town for 27 thousand people with an estimated cost of 182 million Euro. The project is expected to begin in 2009 and to be concluded in 2011.

    [02] PACE - IMMIGRATION

    The Cyprus government aims to revise its immigration policy on a constant basis so as to face this big challenge, taking into consideration the interests of the island as well as the protection of immigrants said MP Andros Kyprianou.

    Speaking at Strasbourg at the 3rd part of the 2008 session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) (23-27 June) Kyprianou also referred to the immense problem, which Cyprus faces as regards the crossing to the government controlled areas of the Republic of thousands of illegal immigrants from the Turkish occupied north of the island through the ceasefire line.

    He also noted that due to Cyprus geographic position, after the accession to the EU the island has become a recipient of waves of immigrants legal and illegal.

    [03] CENTRAL BANK - MALTA

    The Malta Financial Services Authority and the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), expressing their mutual interest and willingness in establishing and promoting bilateral ties in the domain of supervision of credit institutions, have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

    According to a CBC press release, the Memorandum was signed on behalf of the Central Bank of Cyprus by its Governor Athanasios Orphanides and on behalf of the Malta Financial Services Authority by its Chairman, Joe V. Bannister.

    The Memorandum of Understanding defines a general framework of mutual cooperation and exchange of information between the two authorities with a view to facilitating the consolidated supervision of cross-border establishments and ensuring the safe and sound functioning of credit institutions in the respective countries, in accordance with their national laws and regulations, the press release notes.

    [04] CTO - BAGHDATIS

    The Cyprus Tourism Organisation announced an agreement it has reached with Cypriot tennis champion Marcos Baghdatis. According to a press release, the agreement makes Cyprus an even more popular sports tourist destination.

    Cyprus has already gained a lot from Baghdatis international wins and the agreement aims at exploiting the athletes international reputation, in the world of tennis, the press release added.

    The Cypriot tennis player won the Beijing 2006 Open, reached the final of the Australian Open in 2006, and was a semi finalist in Wimbledon the same year.
