[01] AGRICULTURE MINISTER - INTERVIEW
[01] AGRICULTURE MINISTER - INTERVIEW
The aim of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the
Environment is to promote sustainable agricultural development in
Cyprus to the benefit of farmers, the economy and society as a whole,
Minister of Agriculture Michalis Polynikis has told CNA in an
interview.
He added that one of the Ministry`s top priorities is tackling the
consequences of the long drought and solving the water supply problem,
as well as managing the protected Akamas peninsula and promoting the
Agricultural Development Programme for the years 2007-2013.
Polynikis pointed out that farmers bear the brunt of the drought and
have not been able to plant new crops, something which puts at risk
their survival. He noted that subsequently the stockbreeders are facing
difficulties due to the lack of animal feed, which they are obliged to
import now at a higher cost.
He said the Ministry of Agriculture was looking into the possibility of
receiving EU grants to support the farmers and stockbreeders through
various European funds.
