  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - VISIT TO UK

President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, departs for London on Wednesday, on his first working visit to the United Kingdom. He will meet Thursday British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

President Christofias will have a separate meeting with Foreign Secretary David Miliband and he is also scheduled to meet the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma.

The Cypriot President will be accompanied by Foreign Minister, Markos Kyprianou, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Government Spokesman, Stephanos Stephanou.

The Cypriot President and the British Prime Minister are expected to discuss, inter alia, issues concerning bilateral relations, European Union issues and the Cyprus problem. They are scheduled to meet on Thursday morning and are expected to address the media after their meeting at 10 Downing Street.

President Christofias will be hosting a press conference at the Cyprus High Commission. The President will meet later on the Foreign Secretary and then the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

An official statement said the visit is taking place at a time of a renewed effort to find a lasting and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, following the election of Demetris Christofias to the presidency in February this year, and his meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mehmet Ali Talat in March. The meeting on 21st March 2008 resulted in an agreement to set in motion efforts by bicommunal working groups and technical committees, aimed at preparing the ground for fully fledged negotiations.

During his stay, President Christofias will also inaugurate the new Cypriot High Commission building on Wednesday afternoon.

    [02] FM - PARIS,LONDON, TIRANA AND MOSCOW

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou has said that it is reasonable to expect frequent meetings and discussions with friendly countries in the framework of talks to solve the Cyprus problem, in order to discuss developments.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his departure for a trip to Paris, London, Tirana and Moscow, Kyprianou said that he was invited to Moscow at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, noting that ``we will have meetings to discuss bilateral issues and the Cyprus problem,`` since Russia ``is a friendly country and always supports the Republic of Cyprus as a permanent member of the Security Council.``

Kyprianou noted that ``it is reasonable that in this process that has begun on the Cyprus problem we must have frequent contacts and keep them up to date and discuss developments.``

[03] CSE - OPERATION EXTENSION OF THREE MARKETS

The Cyprus Stock Exchange has decided to extend the opening hours of its Parallel Market, its Alternative Market and its Investment Companies Market.

The above Markets will commence one hour earlier, at 1000 local time (0700GMT) instead of 1100.

A Cyprus Stock Exchange press release says that the decision will be effective from June 17, 2008.

    [04] BAGDATIS - SURBITION TROPHY

Cypriot tennis Marcos Baghdatis will compete in the Surbiton Trophy as he bids to improve his fitness ahead of Wimbledon.
