[01] EP VICE-PRESIDENT - CHRISTOFIAS-TALAT MEETING
Vice-President of the European Parliament and expert on Cyprus of the
Socialist Group Mechtild Rothe welcomed the fact that President
Christofias and T/c leader Mehmet Ali Talat have reiterated their
commitment to a bizonal, bicommunal federation and that they decided to
meet again, one month from now, after their meeting on May 23th.
It is a good sign that Dimitris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat
continue their talks. I know that the people of Cyprus look forward to
a comprehensive solution and I am very happy that both leaders are
sincere about overcoming Cyprus division, Rothe noted in a written
statement.
She added that the process of reunification will require concession
from both communities. That is what Christofias and Talat are doing and
that makes me very hopeful she pointed out.
[02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM
Cyprus House and DIKO party President Marios Karoyan has submitted to
the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias thoughts and
proposals with a view to strengthen the Greek Cypriot negotiating
position as regards the Cyprus problem and create the circumstances so
as the basis of the Greek Cypriot sides positions to enjoy a bigger
acceptance on behalf of the international community.
Speaking after a meeting with President Christofias, during which he
was briefed on the latest developments of the Cyprus efforts and the
meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, DIKO President
noted that there are positive elements in the joint statement, issued
after that meeting, adding there are also some points which are
described as a constructive ambiguity causing reasonable concerns.
